If you read my review of the Parabody Smith Machine, you’ll know that I didn’t buy this Body Solid Smith but I came darn close, and I would buy one today based on the low price – keep reading for the whole story…
When I was shopping for my smith machine, my short list came down to the Hoist PTS LAT Smith Machine, Parabody Smith Machine and the Body Solid Series 7 Smith Machine.
I really wanted the Hoist Smith, but once I showed the machine to my wife and told her the price, that was no longer an option (that was a sad day for me, but I understood).
Now that the Hoist was off the list, my choice was narrowed down to the Parabody and the Body Solid.
The one area where the Body Solid surpasses the Parabody is, the Body Solid has a pec deck built into the back side of the cage. It’s a nice option that’s sure to get plenty of use by most users.
One thing you’ll notice right away, is the Body Solid and Parabody smith machines are very, very similar. They both have:
- 7 degree linear ball bearing smith carriage system
- built-in Olympic weight holders
- 200 pound selectorized weight stack with low row
- multi-position front gun rack for free weight training
- adjustable bench with optional leg developer
So why did I buy the Parabody instead of the Body Solid Smith Machine if they’re so similar? Like most big decisions in life, it usually comes down to the almighty dollar.
I was able to find a floor model Parabody locally a couple years ago (they only sell Parabody to local markets) that saved me about $700 bucks compared to a new machine from either manufacturer at the time – but that’s a non-issue now as the price on the Series 7 is cheaper than the deal I got on the floor model when I bought it.
If you’re in the market for a smith machine today I would get the Body Solid 7 Series. You can get one cheaper online than you can locally, save money on tax and have it delivered right to your door in a couple days with free shipping…

I am in the market for a home gym. Mainly for my 8th grade son to start training at home as he advances thru high school. I like the idea of a Smith Machine. I have been looking at the multifunctional machines. My goal is to get something he can do a variety of work with and supplement w/ dumbells and other resistance training. Is there a machine you’d recommend? We have been looking at the machines available at Dick’s. I am trying to keep it in the $1000 range or less before adding a bench and weights. Thanks for the consideration. JT
