Fitness Gear Ultimate Smith Machine

The Fitness Gear Ultimate Smith Machine is a model that is private labeled to Dicks Sporting Goods and is sold in their stores only and is not available online. With so much interest in this machine I think they’re making a huge mistake by trying to keep this thing a secret from the online world.

The Ultimate Smith is a pretty run of the mill smith, but is packed with tons of features that will make you look twice when you see the price.

It comes with a full cage, front liftoffs and safety catches, a cable crossover unit, weight bench, high pulley, low pulley and a weight tree built into the back post of the cage.

The biggest problem with the Ultimate Smith 2 is, the smith carriage runs on bushings instead of linear bearings. This is a common problem to cheap smith machines – using linear bearings makes the manufacturing cost go up and puts the equipment out of reach for most people.

On the plus side, the Ultimate Smith does come standard with a cable crossover unit built-in to the front side of the rack. This same option will cost you thousands on club quality smith machine like a Hoist, so it’s a welcome addition to a budget smith system like the Ultimate (the cable cross on the Ultimate operates on bushings FYI).

I’ve seen these sold at Dick’s anywhere from $799 all the way up to $1299 for the entire package. If you can find one with all the attachments and bench for $799 it’s a pretty good deal, but at $1299 you should get your head examined if you’re even thinking about it.

A much better option in the $1000 price range is the Body Solid Smith Machine found here

I recently had a family member give me this Ultimate Smith Machine by Fitness Gear. It is the exact one that you have pictured. Like a dummy he didn’t take pictures before he dis-assembled it and now I am having a problem getting the pulley system figured out. I have spent hours trying to locate a manual or detailed picture of this unit with no luck. Is there any help that you can offer? Thanks.

The Ultimate Smith Machine is a Dicks Sporting Goods model exclusive so I would check with them and see if they have any manuals lying around, or if they can point you to an online resource.

I saw the comment here that you have the exercise manual for the Ultimate Smith 2. I’ve searched all over the web and Dicks no longer carries this product. Is it possible to get a copy of the exercise manual from you? maybe you have an electronic version you can email me? Please let me know thanks. Please respond if you can help to jay@gencorecovery.com thanks

I have the ultimate smith machine and love it. if you buy the bench that goes with it there is nothing this monster cannot do. if you put a 2×4 between the rack you can do calf raises( screw them together to make a long H and stand in the middle). this is way better than going to the gym and using the equipment after the fat smelly, sweaty dude gets off it. if you can get it for 1200 bucks with the bench I think you will get your money’s worth.

Unbelievable. I have been shopping for a home gym (treadmill, multi-function smith machine, dumbells..ect.) for a few months. I understand rating elite equipment as “Elite” but most of the reviewers rate everything not “elite” as junk, or if thats all you can afford. I bought this item used..and it is sweet. I bench 315-400 working out, no problems. The smith never bunches, even with squat weights approaching 600lbs. This is a fine durable piece of equipment. Reading these “unbiased” reviews is fine but do yourself a favor, go use the equipment to see how it works for you. Treadmills, benches, home gyms…there are a ton of diamonds in the rough even at the “budget” level.
